Nice pic ... some similar pics at night @ http://amitkulkarni.info/pics/durga-puja-festival/
This is devi puja as it is done in Kolkata. I think you missed the whole SHAKTI PUJA part of it I guess.
Better luck next time.
Is the Shakti puja where they burn the big pink 'demon'? I saw that, but posted that last year, so thought i'd post something different this year!
I was talking about the Garba which is played mostly by ladies. It is folk dance of Gujarat. Men also perform folk dance but with small sticks.
The idea is, in old days most females were bound with home duties. These 10 days they had all the freedom of dancing. Probably the only festival when they could dance/play in front of elders.
The whole idea of Navratri is to enhance shakti(strength) of Goddess Durga who is fighting against demon Mahisasur (Mahis = Bufello, Asur = Demon). Why bufello? If you look at bufello today, they eat and put on but hardly work... you now where I am getting to?
Also, during this time, you will see small, colored earthen pot with a small holes all over. That it self is called Garbo.
Too much info? :-) But anyways, seeing Mumbai pictures is absolute fun.
Thank you.
thanks for the great info!
Yeah i saw the dancing as well, but its hard to get good photos of it since its always at night (or at least when i've seen) and they are moving so quickly! i'll have to look forward to trying to capture just that next year!
