swastika
Until coming to India I only associated the swastika with nazi Germany.
The left - facing swastika is a holy symbol in Hinduism. Never thought I would have a swastik on my front door, until living in India! I even saw a swastik on a Buddha's chest in Hong Kong.
This swastika is made from flowers and is not the one on my door.

Brilliant colors! Why do they put it on the front door? Is it during a special time of year/celebration?
Hello,
Where was this taken? This is the 'inauspicious' swastika! The religious Hindu swastika is a right facing one and not a left facing one like the one shown here.
The left facing one is used in certain 'left-handed' rituals which actually do not have the sanction of Hindu scriptures.
The problem nowadays is complete lack of knowledge among these decorators - in the past there were actually people trained in these arts - which combine aesthetic and spiritual appeal
Thanks.
My apologies. I just looked at the swastika on my door it is right facing. This photo was taken from the wrong side.
I am not Hindu and I am obviously ignorant about a lot of details in India still, but willing to learn. I appreciate your correction and your car story was funny.
yeah, no driving fast in mumbai...sorry
Oh - no problem at all! I don't know if i came across as rude while pointing it out. If so, sorry for that.
This is a very nice blog here. I am right now in Ann Arbor but till very recently was in Bombay. Your blog just reminds me of all those sights and sounds!
And thanks for dropping by my blog!
Yes, the swastika has a positive connotations before Hitler, but, I work with Holocaust survivor, and I'm sure they would still have negative associations. In the United States, the swastika is used by neo-nazi hate groups.
Very interesting picture. I knew it was an ancient symbol but I can't help thinking nazis should never have adopted it for their filthy cause.
