i am not exactly sure but yes, i think different stones stand for different zones in the mind or body or something :)
Do both men and women wear it?
these are basically birth stones (mostly per birth zodiac sign)...
or stones according to boost a normal or a weaker planet or moon house(section) in his/her birth chart. For e.g in this photo its a pearl for the moon for mental peace, stomach ails and so on...

Planets are suppose to have effects on human mind and body just like Sun and Moon affects tides in sea.
When certain planets are in certain constellations, they seem to have varying effect on different people based on their birt date, time and location. Astrologers/spriritual gurus then suggest to wear certain "stones" to make time favourable or less suffering.
Here is a chart that gives which stone is related to which planet.
Sun - Ruby
Moon - white pearl
Jupiter - topaz (yellow sapphire??)
Venus - Diamond
Satrun - Blue sapphire
Mercury - Emrald (Green)
Mars - red coral
Rahu - Hessonite
Ketu - Cats eye
Nice snaps :-)
